In short: Located in Barbados, the Garrison Historic Area served as a vital British military headquarters for centuries. Beyond its strategic barracks and historic cannons, this site hosted George Washington during his only trip abroad and witnessed the precise moment Barbados transitioned from a British colony to an independent sovereign nation.

The Garrison Historic Area, situated roughly 3.2 kilometers south of Bridgetown, stands as a testament to the complex colonial history of the Caribbean. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it functioned as the primary base for the British West India Regiment. The district is defined by the Garrison Savannah, a 12-hectare parade ground that has served as the heart of local horse racing since the mid-eighteenth century, a tradition established by wealthy residents and military personnel stationed at the site.

The area is deeply intertwined with global history. In 1751, George Washington spent six weeks in the Bush Hill section of the Garrison while caring for his ailing brother. Today, the restored property, known as the George Washington House, remains a prominent fixture of the district. The site also holds significance for the British military lineage; Major-General Richard Clement Moody, the founder and first Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, was born within the Garrison while his father served with the Royal Engineers.

The architectural legacy of the Garrison includes numerous military structures, such as the buildings now housing the Barbados Museum and the former prison cells. The site's role in governance culminated on 30 November 1966, when it hosted the ceremony marking the end of British rule. As the Union Flag was lowered and the Barbados flag raised, the Garrison became the symbolic birthplace of the independent nation of Barbados. Today, Saint Ann's Fort within the district serves as the base for the Barbados Defence Force, maintaining the site's long-standing military connection.
