In short: Built for the 1962 Asian Games, Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno Stadium remains a masterpiece of political will and engineering. Its iconic circular roof, once dismissed by Soviet designers as impossible, stands today as a symbol of Indonesian grandeur, having evolved from a massive 110,000-seat arena into a modern, all-seater landmark.

Conceived by Indonesia's first president, Sukarno, the stadium was the centerpiece of a massive sports complex in the Senayan area. Sukarno, an architect by training, personally insisted on the stadium's signature 'temu gelang' or circular roof design. Despite initial resistance from Soviet architects who doubted the feasibility of such an unusual structure, Sukarno's persistence ensured the design was implemented, creating a roof intended to shade spectators and amplify the stadium's sense of scale.

The facility's history reflects the turbulent political shifts of the nation. Originally opened in 1962, it was renamed 'Gelora Senayan' in 1969 under Suharto's 'de-Sukarnoization' policy. It wasn't until 2001 that President Abdurrahman Wahid restored the original name, honoring the founding president. Throughout these decades, the stadium has served as more than a sports venue; it has been a site for massive political rallies, including presidential campaigns, and a host for historic religious gatherings, such as masses led by three different popes.

Modernization has significantly altered the stadium's physical footprint. While it once held 110,000 people—and hosted a record-breaking 150,000 spectators for a 1985 football match—safety and FIFA standards have driven capacity down. Renovations for the 2007 AFC Asian Cup and the 2018 Asian Games transformed the venue into an all-seater stadium with a capacity of 77,193. The most recent overhaul, costing approximately Rp769.69 billion, introduced a vibrant red, white, and grey seating scheme and advanced LED lighting, ensuring the stadium remains a functional, world-class hub for international football and major national events.
