Why the modern gender reveal party has become a dangerous and controversial cultural phenomenon
In short: Originating in the late 2000s, gender reveal parties have evolved from simple cake-based announcements into elaborate, often hazardous spectacles. While intended to celebrate a new arrival, these events have faced intense scrutiny for reinforcing rigid social binaries and, in extreme cases, causing fatal accidents and massive environmental destruction.
The gender reveal party emerged in the United States during the late 2000s, gaining significant traction through social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram. Early iterations, such as the 2008 blog posts by Jenna Karvunidis, used simple methods like cakes to share a fetus's sex. Over the following decade, the trend grew, often blending with traditional baby showers. While baby showers historically focused on providing gifts for the expectant parents, gender reveals center on the biological sex of the fetus, typically determined via ultrasound around the second trimester.
The practice is frequently criticized for promoting gender essentialism and reinforcing the gender binary. Critics argue that these events rely on stereotypical dichotomies, such as 'wheels or heels' or 'pistols or pearls,' which fail to account for the complexities of gender identity. Furthermore, the assumption that a child will fit neatly into these categories ignores the reality of intersex births, which occur in an estimated 1 in 4,500 to 5,500 cases. Even the term 'gender reveal' is viewed by many as a misnomer, as the event identifies biological sex rather than the social construct of gender.
The most alarming aspect of the trend involves the pursuit of increasingly spectacular reveals. This quest for virality has led to dangerous stunts, including the use of improvised explosives and pyrotechnics. These methods have resulted in tragic outcomes, such as the 2017 Sawmill Fire in Arizona and the 2020 El Dorado Fire in California, the latter of which caused the death of a firefighter. Other incidents include fatal plane crashes and injuries from flying shrapnel. Consequently, even early pioneers like Karvunidis have expressed regret, urging the public to abandon these high-risk celebrations.
