In short: After a decade in South Africa's National Assembly, Geordin Hill-Lewis has ascended to the leadership of the Democratic Alliance. Having served as the Mayor of Cape Town since 2021, he now balances municipal governance with the strategic direction of one of the country's major political parties.

Geordin Hill-Lewis's political trajectory is marked by a rapid ascent through the Democratic Alliance (DA) ranks. He first entered the National Assembly in August 2011 at age 24, making him the youngest MP since 1994. During his tenure in the lower house, which lasted until his resignation in November 2021, he held several high-profile roles in the DA's Shadow Cabinet, including Shadow Minister of Trade and Industry and Shadow Minister of Finance. Before his parliamentary career, he worked as the chief of staff for Western Cape Premier Helen Zille. He also founded the Democratic Alliance Students' Organisation during his university years.

His transition to executive municipal leadership began in November 2021, when he was elected Mayor of Cape Town with 141 out of 224 votes. He was the city's second youngest mayor at 34, trailing only David Graaff. During his time as mayor, he introduced a seven-point strategy to combat loadshedding by buying power from Independent Power Producers and funding the Steenbras hydroelectric plant. His mayoral campaign was launched in Bonteheuwel following a competitive internal selection process. During this period, he had previously served as the DA's constituency head in George.

In April 2026, Hill-Lewis was elected Federal Leader of the DA at the party's Federal Congress, succeeding John Steenhuisen. He chose to retain his position as Mayor of Cape Town rather than returning to the National Assembly, a move intended to allow him to maintain a distance from the Cabinet and more effectively critique presidential decisions while serving as party leader. Following his election, he appointed several party strategists and ministers to oversee various government departments. His leadership also involved making significant changes to the party's national executive appointments.
