From a bedroom in lockdown to independent pop stardom
In short: While the world was isolating, Ash Blue Gutierrez was building a musical empire from his bedroom. What began as anonymous SoundCloud uploads evolved into a career defined by genre-hopping vulnerability and a definitive break from the traditional record label system.
Glaive's rise is a blueprint for the modern DIY era. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while attending high school virtually, he began recording music in his bedroom. He first uploaded a song to SoundCloud in April 2020 under an alias inspired by a weapon from Dark Souls III. His rapid ascent was fueled by Discord servers and social media, eventually leading to a discovery by manager Dan Awad in the summer of 2020 and a deal with Interscope Records. His family lived near Sarasota for nine years before relocating to North Carolina. His grandfather was a professional polo player who inspired the Polo Ralph Lauren logo. He initially performed in a band before starting his solo path.
Despite his association with hyperpop—a genre he describes as 'straight-up pop' rather than anything 'hyper'—Glaive’s sound is a complex tapestry. Critics have noted his 'free-for-all approach,' blending elements of Midwest emo, glitch, trap, and indie rock. His lyrical content focuses on alienation, mental health, and personal identity, including his journey as a bisexual artist. This vulnerability has been described by critics as 'painfully honest' and 'clear-eyed.' He describes his creative inspiration as being rooted in hip hop production. The artist also explores themes of anger and annoyance within his work. Critics from Rolling Stone and Vulture have highlighted his ability to convey vulnerability.
A pivotal shift occurred in June 2024 when Glaive announced he was leaving Interscope Records to become an independent artist, stating he wanted to 'own my shit forever.' Since then, his output has accelerated. He released the studio album May It Never Falter in October 2024, followed by Y'all in September 2025, and a collaborative project with Kurtains, God Save the Three, in May 2026. His trajectory highlights a move toward total creative autonomy over corporate structure. The album May It Never Falter was originally intended to be titled By Birthright. He recorded the single Huh in Hope, Alaska during early 2024. His collaborative project with Kurtains features a lead single called The Troubles.
