When the dead return in perfect health, who owns the truth?
In short: Imagine a small town where the cemetery suddenly empties. Seven people return from the grave, physically flawless but stripped of every memory. In the fictional town of Yoorana, this supernatural anomaly sparks a desperate, secretive search for a truth that could shatter the community's reality.
Developed by Tony Ayres and Louise Fox, Glitch is an Australian supernatural drama that premiered on ABC on July 9, 2015. The narrative centers on the mystery of 'the Risen'—individuals who reappear in perfect physical condition but with no knowledge of their past identities. The story follows a small-town policeman, James Hayes, who is tasked with keeping the existence of these people hidden from the public while working with a local doctor, Elishia McKellar, to uncover the underlying cause.
The series gained significant critical acclaim early on, winning Best Television Drama Series at the 2016 AACTA Awards and Most Outstanding Drama Series at the 2016 Logie Awards. It expanded its reach through a global streaming partnership with Netflix, which hosted the first series in October 2016 and subsequent seasons through 2019. While the show shares thematic similarities with the 2012 French series Les Revenants (known internationally as The Returned), the creators maintain that the scripts were developed independently.
The narrative arc evolved over three seasons, moving from the initial mystery of the return to a journey of reconciliation, romance, and revenge, eventually introducing a more lethal threat in the second series. However, the show's critical reception shifted as it progressed; while the first two seasons maintained an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the third season—concluding in August 2019—was notably less well-received, with the final episode earning the lowest rating of the series.
