In short: Commissioned by a railway company and opened in 1924, Gleneagles has transformed from a luxury destination into a military hospital, a site for historic G8 summits, and a world-renowned golf resort. Its history is woven with radio broadcasts, rock performances, and the development of some of golf's most iconic courses.

Located near Auchterarder, Scotland, the Gleneagles Hotel was originally commissioned by the Caledonian Railway. By the time it officially opened in 1924, the railway company had been absorbed into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. The hotel's debut was marked by a pioneering moment in media history: Scotland's first-ever outside radio broadcast on 7 June 1924, orchestrated by bandleader Henry Hall. This early focus on entertainment helped establish the hotel as a premier destination, though its function shifted dramatically during the Second World War when it served as a military hospital under the direction of Dr. Thomas Ferguson.

The post-war era saw the property change hands several times, moving from the British Transport Commission to private operators, and eventually coming under the ownership of major corporations like Arthur Bell & Sons, Guinness, and Diageo. A significant turning point occurred in the 1980s, when the hotel underwent an £11 million renovation between 1982 and 1986. Since 1982, the hotel has operated year-round, and it has consistently earned five red stars from the AA since 1986. In 2015, the property was sold to the private investment firm Ennismore.

Beyond its hospitality, Gleneagles is a major sporting hub. It features three tournament-standard golf courses, including the Jack Nicklaus-designed PGA Centenary Course, which hosted the 40th Ryder Cup in 2014. The grounds have also hosted significant political events, such as the 1977 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting—which produced the Gleneagles Agreement—and the 31st G8 summit in July 2005. Today, the estate continues to host elite sporting events, including the Senior Open Championship, while maintaining its legacy as a site of both cultural and political significance.
