In short: Tucked between the Yellowstone River and the Badlands, Glendive is a historic railroad town with a unique media footprint. While it once thrived as a cattle and oil hub, it now holds the distinction of being the only U.S. television market without a single commercial broadcast station.

Established by the Northern Pacific Railway during the late 19th century, Glendive served as the headquarters for the railroad's Yellowstone Division. The town grew rapidly after the arrival of the first lumber shipment in 1881, transforming from a collection of tents and dirt-roofed log cabins into a bustling agricultural and ranching center. By 1884, at the height of the cattle boom, the area saw as many as 12,000 cattle arrive weekly to graze the open range.

The town's relationship with the Yellowstone River has been both a lifeline and a source of environmental crisis. In 1855, Irish sportsman Sir George Gore named a local tributary 'Glendive,' a name the town adopted 25 years later. However, in January 2015, the river became the site of a major environmental disaster when a pipeline spill released 30,000 gallons of Bakken crude oil into the water. The contamination, which affected drinking water and local wildlife, resulted in a $2,000,000 restoration payment from the pipeline operator in 2022.

Today, Glendive is a quiet community of approximately 4,760 people. Its media landscape is particularly notable; as the smallest of the 210 designated television markets in the United States, it lacks commercial stations entirely. While it was once served by a dual-affiliated station, the market has shifted, leaving residents to rely on other sources for broadcast content. Despite its small size, the city remains a hub for eastern Montana, hosting Dawson Community College and maintaining its status as the seat of Dawson County.
