A road built by soldiers and giants of the forest
In short: The Great Ocean Road is more than a scenic drive; it is a monument to post-war reconstruction. Stretching 243 kilometers along the Australian coast, this heritage route weaves through ancient wet sclerophyll forests and towering Mountain Ash trees that have stood for half a millennium.
The Great Ocean Road serves as a historical bridge between the wreckage of World War I and the natural splendor of the Australian coastline. Constructed during the Great Depression by returned soldiers, the 243-kilometer stretch between Torquay and Allansford has since been recognized by the Australian Heritage Trust for its cultural and historical significance.
The geography of the route transitions from windswept coastlines to the rugged Otways hinterland. Travelers move from the panoramic views of the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait into dense fern gullies and dry heathy scrub. This diverse landscape includes the spectacular Erskine Falls and the iconic Great Ocean Walk, offering a transition from coastal exposure to sheltered mountain forests.
A defining feature of the Great Otway National Park is its ancient flora. The region is home to Mountain Ash trees, giants of the wet sclerophyll forests that can live for up to 500 years. To protect diverse habitats from tiny plants to unique wildlife for visitors, a joint venture involving the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) and Parks Victoria oversees the area.
Accessibility and safety are central to the park's management. To ensure inclusivity, the Colac Otway Shire and Surf Coast Shire provide all-terrain 'Trailrider' wheelchairs for visitors with mobility difficulties. However, the park's wild nature requires caution; visitors are advised on water safety and the risks of activities like rock fishing, as conditions in these natural environments can change rapidly.
