A century-old oil tunnel now serves as a bioluminescent sanctuary
In short: Discover how an abandoned industrial relic in New South Wales became a home for glowing life. This film uses long exposure photography to reveal the hidden world of glowworms living deep within the earth.
Constructed between 1906 and 1907, the Glowworm Tunnel was originally designed to transport shale oil from Newnes to Lithgow. Located on the Newnes Plateau in Wollemi National Park, the 400-meter structure has transitioned from a piece of industrial infrastructure into a unique habitat.
The tunnel's deepest sections are now inhabited by resident glowworms. Because these organisms are difficult to capture on standard cameras, the footage utilizes long exposure photography and modern video compositing to visualize their bioluminescence in ways never seen before.
