Can we still build a fortress using only 13th-century technology?
In short: In the forests of Burgundy, archaeologists are attempting to solve one of history's greatest riddles: how were monumental medieval structures actually built? This documentary follows an audacious project to construct a castle from scratch using no modern shortcuts.
The Guédelon project is an exercise in experimental archaeology. Starting in 1995, the team began building a medieval-style castle using only the materials and methods available in the 1200s. By pitting 21st-century theories against actual 13th-century experience, the project aims to smash preconceived notions about medieval architecture.
Because it is nearly impossible to deconstruct an existing historical site without destroying it, this construction serves as a unique laboratory. It allows researchers to unlock the secrets of builders by examining every component—from stone walls to structural tiers—as they are created in real-time.
