In short: Eikichi Onizuka was a 22-year-old former bōsōzfully member with no interest in pedagogy. Yet, after witnessing a teacher's profound influence over a student, he embarked on a mission to become the greatest teacher ever, using methods that were often unorthodox, illegal, and life-threatening.

Created by Tōru Fujisawa, the manga series Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) first appeared in Weekly Shōnen Magazine between January 1997 and February 2002. The story follows Onizuka, a former gang member (yankī) who earns a teaching degree from a second-rate college to pursue a life of significance. Set primarily in Tokyo, the narrative centers on his tenure at Holy Forest Academy, a private middle school in Kichijōji, where he attempts to reach a class of students so volatile they have driven previous teachers to nervous breakdowns or even death.

Fujisawa drew inspiration from the playwright Kōhei Tsuka, aiming to blend humor with touching moments. The character of Onizuka himself was modeled after the bleached hair and tough appearance of Japanese gang members, though his personality is a complex mix of outward confidence and inward shyness. While the series is famous for its 'smutty' and 'shameless' elements, critics like Jason Thompson have noted its capacity for true social satire, moving beyond simple comedy to critique a traditional education system that often ignores student needs.

The franchise's massive success, with over 50 million copies in circulation by 2007, led to numerous adaptations. These include a highly successful 1998 live-action drama that achieved an average audience share of 28.5% in the Kantō region, and a 43-episode anime series produced by Studio Pieront. The legacy continues decades later with the 2024 revival, featuring a 49-year-old Onizuka, and the announcement of a 2026 series where the character is aged to 52, proving the enduring appeal of this unconventional educator.
