How a misunderstood English teacher became a manga and anime sensation
In short: In the manga series Yowayowa Sensei, a shy new teacher is mistaken for a villain. Her reliance on sticky notes and a quiet demeanor leads students to label her the "Scary Teacher," but a high school student discovers the gentle reality behind the rumors.
Kamio Fukuchi authored and drew Yowayowa Sensei, which first appeared in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine on 16 November 2022. The plot follows Hiyori Hiwamura, a woman who just finished university and is starting work as an English instructor. Because of her extreme shyness, she struggles to make a positive impression on her students, who misinterpret her behavior and nickname her "Scary Teacher." The story originates from Kamio Fukuchi's work. This creator is responsible for both writing and illustrating the entire series.
The narrative follows Akihito Abikura, a second-year high school student who realizes Hiyori is merely misunderstood after observing her practice teaching to a stuffed animal in an empty classroom. To help her build confidence, Akihito offers to become class representative. The series explores their developing relationship, which occasionally leads to lewd situations. Mizuki Mukubayashi, a gyaru classmate, eventually joins him as a co-representative. She has secretly harboured feelings for him since their elementary school days.
The franchise expanded significantly in the mid-2020s. An anime television series produced by Brain's Base aired between April 11 and June 27, 2026. By September 2026, the manga had been compiled into nineteen tankōbon volumes. The series has also seen international reach, with Sentai Filmworks licensing the series for streaming on Hidive in North America, including an English dub that premiered on June 24, 2026. A promotional video featuring Marika Kōno was released on YouTube. Additionally, a collaboration with the cosplayer Enako was launched in June 2024.
