In short: Guadalajara International Airport has evolved from a modest 1951 airfield into Mexico’s third-busiest aviation gateway. Beyond its role as the primary hub for Volaris, this facility has navigated decades of rapid expansion, complex land disputes, and a history marked by both tragic accidents and pivotal moments in Mexican infrastructure.

Inaugurated on March 1, 1951, by President Miguel Alemán Valdés, the airport originally featured two asphalt runways and a small terminal. By 1968, the facility underwent a major reconstruction to accommodate wide-body aircraft, extending its main runway to 4,000 meters. This transformation was part of a broader evolution that saw the airport modernize with jetbridges and advanced lighting systems by 1973. Its strategic importance grew in the 1980s as the aviation industry sought to decentralize traffic from Mexico City, leading to the establishment of a significant maintenance base in 1988.

The airport's history is also defined by turbulence. In 1993, a violent confrontation between the Logan Heights and Sinaloa cartels in the parking lot resulted in the death of Archbishop Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo. Additionally, the airport has faced persistent operational challenges, including long-standing conflicts with local residents over land expropriations dating back to 1975. These disputes delayed critical infrastructure projects, such as the construction of a second parallel runway, which was finally inaugurated in July 2023 to facilitate segregated operations.

Today, the airport serves as a vital economic engine for the region, operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico. Recent master plans for 2025–2029 include a $2.52 billion USD investment to further expand terminal capacity by 70% and secure land for a potential third runway. With its first direct European connection to Madrid established in 2021, the airport continues to solidify its position as a key international hub, managing over 18 million passengers annually while supporting extensive cargo operations and general aviation.
