In short: Located in Rionegro, the José María Córdova International Airport serves as the primary international hub for the Medellín metropolitan area. Built to overcome the spatial limitations of the city's older in-town airport, it has evolved into a vital logistics and passenger center, handling millions of travelers and significant regional cargo.

Conceived in the 1970s, the airport was designed to replace the constrained Olaya Herrera Airport, which could not accommodate the growing needs of the Antioquia Department. After evaluating sites in Barbosa and the San Nicolas valley, planners selected the Rionegro location. The facility officially opened on August 29, 1985, and briefly became the primary hub for the region while Olaya Herrera underwent a closure lasting from 1986 to 1991.

The airport is a critical piece of infrastructure for Colombia, ranking as the country's second-largest airport by passenger service and capacity. Its strategic importance was bolstered by a massive 2017 renovation, which cost $350 million and expanded the terminal space to 50,000 square metres. This project increased annual capacity to 11 million passengers. Further connectivity improvements arrived in 2019 with the opening of the Túnel de Oriente, a highway project that reduced the travel time between the airport and Medellín from nearly an hour to approximately 20 minutes.

Beyond passenger travel, the airport serves as a major export hub for regional products, particularly flowers. Avianca Cargo maintains its primary base here, facilitating trade across the Americas. The facility is also notable for its technical capabilities; in 2006, it hosted the first landing of an Airbus A380 on South American soil for engine testing. While the airport is equipped with advanced navigation aids like ILS and VOR to mitigate the challenges of mountain weather, its history is marked by several notable aviation accidents, including the 2016 crash of LaMia Flight 2933, which claimed 71 lives.
