The Panamanian hub that once faced a military seizure
In short: Tocumen International Airport is more than just a transit point for the Americas. Once seized by U.S. paratroopers during the 1989 invasion, this vital hub has evolved through massive structural reforms and multi-million dollar expansions to become a cornerstone of regional aviation.
Serving as the primary international gateway to Panama City, Tocumen International Airport functions as a critical regional hub for North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean. It serves as the primary base for Copa Airlines and maintains connections to various European cities and cargo routes to Qatar. The airport's history is marked by significant political and structural shifts, including a period where the original name was reestablished following the 1989 U.S. invasion and the seizure of the facility by the 82nd Airborne Division.
The airport has undergone extensive modernization to manage increasing traffic. In 2003, management transitioned from the Civil Aeronautics Directorate to Tocumen, S.A., following a new regulatory framework established by Law No. 23. This era of growth included a 2006 expansion that added 20,830 m2 to the main passenger terminal at a cost of approximately US$21 million. This project expanded the airport's capacity to 28 boarding gates by adding 22 new bridges and 6 remote positions.
Further large-scale development arrived with the South Terminal project. Following a 2012 bidding process won by the Brazilian company Odebrecht, Tocumen S.A. invested US$780 million into the expansion. This massive undertaking included 20 additional gates, a new terminal, and infrastructure such as the diversion of the Tocumen river. Although the new terminal had its official opening on 29 April 2019, actual operations only commenced on 22 June 2022. Connectivity has also improved for travelers, with the Aeropuerto metro station of the Panama Metro opening at the airport on 16 March 2023.
