From Rajasthan's Legislative Assembly to the Governor's House
In short: Gulab Chand Kataria’s political trajectory is a study in endurance and institutional navigation. Over five decades, he has moved from local representation in Udaipur to holding some of India's most significant administrative roles, balancing partisan leadership with high-level governance across multiple states.
Born on October 13, 1944, in Rajsamand, Gulab Chand Kataria has built a career defined by long-term tenure and diverse portfolios. His legislative experience is extensive; he served as a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly for several periods, representing Udaipur from 1977 to 1986 and again from 2003 to 2023. He also represented Bari Sadri between 1993 and 2003. This deep local roots provided the foundation for his rise within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where he served as the state president from 1999 to 2000. He is a senior leader within the central working committee of his party. His political history includes serving as the Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly during three distinct periods. He also held this role from 2002 to 2003 and again between 2019 and 2023.
Kataria’s executive experience is equally varied, spanning roles in both opposition and government. Rajasthan's Home Minister role was occupied by him twice, spanning 2004–2008 and then 2014–2018. Additionally, he served as the education minister under the Bhairon Singh Shekhawat government between 1993 and 1998. His influence reached the national level when he represented Udaipur in the 9th Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991. During his time in the lower house of Parliament, he represented Udaipur. He was also a minister for Rajasthan from 2013 to 2018. Notably, a special court found him not guilty regarding an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
In recent years, Kataria has transitioned into high-level constitutional roles. Following a tenure as Assam's Governor between February 2023 and July 2024, he became Punjab's 37th Governor and Chandigarh's 17th Administrator on 31 July 2024. Beyond politics, he has engaged in cultural promotion, notably releasing the Urdu edition of Salil Gewali's book 'Great Minds on India' in 2023, a work featuring a foreword by NASA chief scientist Dr. Kamlesh Lulla. The book he released has been translated into fifteen different languages as of 2026. He is married to Anita Kataria and has five daughters.
