In short: For years, Gulu was the epicenter of a brutal war of attrition. As the Lord’s Resistance Army terrorized the Acholi people, thousands of children fled to the city every night, seeking refuge from a conflict driven by spiritual visions and political instability.

Located roughly 175 miles north of Kampala, Gulu serves as the vital agricultural and commercial hub for northern Uganda. However, its history is deeply scarred by colonial-era divisions. During British rule, the northern Acholi people were often marginalized and stigmatable as 'primitive' compared to southern groups. This institutionalized inequality, compounded by the military dictatorship of Idi Amin (1971–1979), created a volatile landscape of regional antagonism.

In the late 1980s, this instability birthed the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Led by Joseph Kony, a man trained as a spirit medium, the group sought to replace the government of President Yoweri Museveni with a state governed by the Ten Commandments. The LRA’s tactics were devastating; they relied on extreme violence and the abduction of over 30,000 children. To escape the violence, up to 15,000 youngsters, known as 'night commuters,' would trek into Gulu every evening for safety.

The conflict forced an estimated two million people into internally displaced person (IDP) camps. While some humanitarian groups criticized these sites as 'concentration camps,' they were a desperate response to the LRA's presence. By 2006, the LRA was largely pushed out of Uganda, and by 2009, most residents had returned to their villages. Today, Gulu is a growing urban center, home to Gulu University and a significant regional airport, transitioning from a site of conflict to a center for commerce and education.
