In short: In 1923, a group of students at Ankara Erkek Lisesi were barred from their school team. Instead of retreating, they formed their own club. What began as a rebellion of the 'Youth Union' eventually evolved into a European powerhouse known as the 'Wind of Ankara'.

The origins of Gençlerbirliği S.K. are rooted in academic exclusion. Founded on 14 March 1923, the club was established by students at Ankara Sultanisi—now Ankara Erkek Lisesi—who had been prevented from playing for the school side, 'Sultani'. Supported by figures like the student's father, a member of parliament, and later the education minister Mustafa Necut Uğural, the group of roughly 25 students quickly established a competitive presence in the Ankara Football League.

The club's identity is steeped in local lore. Their signature red and black colours are said to either reflect the limited fabric available at a local Ulus tailor or to mirror the red-and-black poppies that bloom across the Anatolian steppe each spring. Their crest conveys this historical legacy by displaying Ankara's 19-ray Hittite Sun disk next to a red star and crescent.

While the club has faced periods of relegation, they achieved legendary status in the early 2000s. Under manager Ersun Yanal, the 2002–03 season saw their highest points total and a third-place Süper Lig finish. This era was defined by a 'fairytale' UEFA Cup run in 2003–04, where they eliminated notable sides like Blackburn Rovers, Sporting CP, and Parma before falling to the eventual champions, Valencia. This success was underpinned by a sophisticated scouting network, pioneered during the long presidency of İllam Cavcav, which focused on developing talent from Anatolia and Africa, producing international stars like Geremi and Arda Güler.

Today, the club remains a fixture of the Ankara derby against rivals Ankaragücü. Though they have navigated significant financial challenges, including a 130 million₺ debt uncovered in 2022, they recently secured promotion back to the Süper Lig in May 2025.
