In short: Spanning only four blocks in width, Guttenberg, New Jersey, packs over 12,000 residents into less than a quarter-square mile. Once a quiet community of row houses and light industry, this Hudson County municipality has transformed into a vertical powerhouse, claiming the highest population density of any incorporated town in the United States.

Guttenberg’s evolution from a 19th-century farm to a modern urban marvel is defined by its geography and its architecture. Originally subdivided in 1853 for German settlers, the town remained a modest collection of two-story homes for over a century. However, the late 1970s brought a dramatic shift with the construction of the Galaxy Towers. These three octagonal skyscrapers, rising 415 feet above the Hudson Palisades, fundamentally altered the town's skyline and demographics, housing nearly one-fifth of the population by 2010.

The town's extreme density is a statistical outlier. By the 2020 Census, Guttenberg reached a density of 57,116 inhabitants per square mile. This figure is so high that it has been described as America's most crowded place. The town's physical footprint is remarkably small, covering only 0.24 square miles in total, of which about 20% is water. Because of its compact size, a driver can traverse the entire municipality in less than a minute, yet the area remains a vital bedroom community for those commuting to Manhattan.

Despite its small size, Guttenberg maintains a distinct identity as part of the North Hudson region. It operates under a traditional town form of government, one of only nine such municipalities in New Jersey. While it has faced political turbulence in the 21st century, including several high-profile corruption cases involving local officials, the town continues to leverage its location. Through its participation in an Urban Enterprise Zone, it offers reduced sales tax rates to encourage investment, balancing its legacy as a historic village with its current status as a hyper-dense urban center.
