The smallest county in New Jersey is its most crowded
In short: Covering just 46.19 square miles of land, Hudson County packs a massive human footprint into a tiny coastal sliver. Known as the Gateway to New York, it serves as a dense urban corridor where industrial history meets modern transit, creating one of the nation's busiest transportation hubs.
Established in 1840 and named for explorer Henry Hudson, who visited the region in 1609, Hudson County is defined by its extreme density. It remains New Jersey’s smallest county geographically, yet it holds the state's title for highest population density. By the 2020 census, the county reached a record high of 724,854 residents—a significant jump from 634,266 in 2010. This growth makes it one of the fastest-growing counties in the state, with its population estimated to reach 735,033 by 2025.
The county serves as a vital artery for the New York metropolitan area. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey oversees the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, connecting this area to Manhattan. Because of these deep transit ties, it is frequently referred to as New York City's "sixth borough." Its economy is anchored in manufacturing—specifically apparel and textiles—alongside trucking, warehousing, health services, and wholesale trade.
Bordered by the Hudson River on its eastern side and the Passaic and Hackensack rivers in the west, the county is a coastal lowland. It contains the waters surrounding the Statue of Liberty National Monument; while Liberty Island belongs to New York, Ellis Island is jointly administered by both states. Due to its heavy concentration of asphalt, brick, and concrete buildings combined with high industrial traffic, the county functions as a "heat island," retaining more atmospheric heat than neighboring rural areas.
