How a local youth academy graduate became a top-ten scorer in MLS history
In short: Gyasi Zardes transformed from a homegrown talent in the LA Galaxy youth system into one of the most prolific strikers in Major League Soccer. His journey, marked by record-breaking seasons and a pivotal comeback in Columbus, highlights the evolution of American soccer development and the resilience required to sustain a professional career.
Born in Hawthorne, California, Gyasi Zardes emerged through the LA Galaxy youth academy before refining his skills at Cal State Bakersfield. His collegiate career was defined by a breakout sophomore season in 2011, where he scored 18 goals in 20 games, earning him the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year title. This performance set the stage for his professional debut, as he signed as a Homegrown Player with the LA Galaxy in December 2012.
Zardes quickly made his mark on the professional stage. In 2014, he set a league record for the most goals by a Homegrown Player in a single season and became the first such player to score in an MLS Cup final, helping the Galaxy secure their fifth title. Despite a challenging transition to right-back later in his Galaxy tenure, a 2018 trade to the Columbus Crew revitalized his career. There, he scored 19 goals in his first season and earned the MLS Comeback Player of the Year Award.
Throughout his career, Zardes has maintained a consistent presence in both league play and international competition. He has represented the United States in multiple CONCACAF Gold Cup tournaments, including scoring the decisive goal in the 2021 semifinal against Qatar. By July 2024, while playing for Austin FC, Zardes reached a significant milestone by entering the top-ten all-time leading scorers in MLS history with 105 career goals. His path reflects the broader growth of the domestic game, moving from local futsal courts in Hawthorne to the highest levels of professional competition.
