In short: In the heart of Haryana, a 90-seat legislature serves as a theater for intense dynastic rule and a notorious history of political switching. From its creation in 1966 to its current seat in Chandigarh, the assembly reflects a unique blend of family legacy and rapid-fire floor-crossing.

The Haryana Legislative Assembly was established in 1966 following the Punjab Reorganisation Act, which carved the state out of Punjab. Since its inception, the body has functioned as a unicameral legislature, with its current seating located in the capital city of Chandigarh. While it began with only 54 seats, the house expanded to 81 in 1967 and reached its current capacity of 90 seats in 1977. These seats are filled through a single-member first-past-the-post voting system, with a standard five-year term of office for the Council of Ministers who are accountable to the house.

The state's political landscape is characterized by a heavy concentration of power within specific families. Since 1966, politics has been dominated by five major political dynasties, including the Lal trio (Devi Lal, Bansi Lal, and Bhajan Lal), the Hooda clan, and the Rao Birender clan. In the remote Mewat region, power is concentrated among three other major dynasties: Tayyab Husain, Rahim Khan, and Khurshid Ahmed. This nepotistic structure has defined the state's governance for decades.

Apart from family-led governance, the region's history is linked to a distinct style of political volatility termed "Aaya Ram Gaya Ram". This 1967 moniker, derived from Gaya Lal, signifies a pattern of rapid party-switching, defection, and clandestine deal-making. One of the most dramatic examples of this volatility occurred in 1977, following the 1975–77 emergency; the Janata Party secured a landslide 75 out of 90 seats, while the Indian National Congress was reduced to just 3 seats.
