The fortress that survived three wars by building on its own past
In short: Discover how Sedan Castle evolved from a modest château into a massive defensive colossus. This documentary explores the innovative engineering that allowed it to withstand six centuries of conflict, including two world wars.
Sedan Castle's survival is rooted in a unique construction method: building new walls directly in front of old ones. By the 15th century, this created a 'mille-feuille' of stone reaching up to 25 metres thick in certain areas to deter invaders.
The fortress introduced the revolutionary concept of bastions, which eventually became a standard for military defense across Europe. Even though it faced combat throughout the 1940 Blitzkrieg, the Great War, and the Franco-Prussian War (1870), its stone-hewn base stayed largely undamaged. The site now spans 35,000 square metres, serving as a monument to medieval engineering and strategic evolution.
