A society where marriage does not exist
In short: In the remote mountains of Yunnan, China, the Mosuo people have maintained a unique social structure for over a millennium. This documentary explores their matriarchal way of life and a romantic practice that prioritizes freedom over cohabitation.
Settled near Lugu Lake over a thousand years ago, the Mosuo are an ethnic minority whose culture centers on a matriarchal system. Unlike most global societies, they do not recognize marriage as a formal institution. Instead, they practice "transitional marriage."
This arrangement allows partners to express love without moving in together or merging households. By maintaining separate family units, both individuals can remain with their own families while choosing when and how to spend time with their lovers.
