How a small Hunan county became a central pillar of modern Chinese history
In short: Shaoshan is the smallest administrative unit in Hunan province, yet it holds outsized significance as the birthplace of Mao Zedong. Beyond its revolutionary legacy, the city is steeped in ancient legend, named for the mythical music of Emperor Shun, and today thrives as a major destination for red tourism.
Located in the east-central hilly region of Hunan, Shaoshan covers a modest area of 247.3 square kilometers. Its landscape is defined by the 518.5-meter peak of Mount Shaofeng and the flow of the Shao and Shishi Rivers. While the city is now a county-level entity under the administration of Xiangtan, its history stretches back to the ancient state of Chu. According to local lore, the city derives its name from the Music of Shao, a melody played by Emperor Shun during a royal inspection that allegedly drew phoenixes and birds to the site.
The modern identity of Shaoshan is inextricably linked to the Chinese Communist Revolution. As the birthplace of Mao Zedong, the city served as a vital base during the revolutionary era. This historical weight continues to shape the local economy, with red tourism acting as a primary driver. Visitors flock to the area to engage with the history of the founder of the People's Republic of China, ensuring that the city remains a prominent site in the national consciousness despite its small geographic footprint.
Administratively, Shaoshan has undergone numerous transformations. It transitioned through various district statuses under Xiangtan County throughout the 20th century, including a period as a provincial-controlled regional district in 1968. It was not until December 26, 1990, that the State Council officially upgraded Shaoshan to a county-level city. Today, the city is organized into two towns and two townships, maintaining a permanent resident population of approximately 97,800 people as of 2015, making it the smallest administrative unit of its kind in Hunan.
