How a small group of engineers built a global IT powerhouse from Noida
In short: Starting as a modest hardware venture in 1976, HCLTech has evolved into one of the world's most prominent IT services firms. Today, this Indian multinational employs over 223,000 people across 60 countries, driving digital transformation through engineering, cloud, and AI solutions while maintaining its headquarters in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
The origins of HCLTech trace back to 1976, when a team of eight engineers, led by Shiv Nadar, left Delhi Cloth & General Mills to launch a company focused on personal computing. Initially operating as Microcomp Limited, the group generated early capital by selling calculators. By August of that same year, the entity was rebranded as Hindustan Computers Limited. The firm quickly established a reputation for indigenous innovation, developing its own microcomputers, networking operating systems, and client-server architectures by the early 1980s.
The transition to a software-focused giant began in 1991, when HCL Technologies was spun off as a separate unit to provide specialized software and technology services. This strategic pivot allowed the company to scale rapidly, expanding its footprint across the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific markets throughout the 1990s. The company went public in 2000, marking a new era of growth that included major acquisitions and joint ventures, such as its partnership with Deutsche Bank and the purchase of the UK-based Axon Group in 2008.
In recent years, HCLTech has solidified its position as a global leader in IT services, reaching $10 billion in revenue by 2021. Under its current brand identity, adopted in 2022, the company operates through three primary segments: IT and Business Services, Engineering and R&D Services, and HCLSoftware. Its portfolio has been significantly bolstered by high-profile acquisitions, including a major suite of software tools from IBM in 2019 and the German automotive engineering firm ASAP Group in 2023. Today, the company continues to influence the global tech landscape from its base in India, consistently ranking among the world's most admired and sustainable professional organizations.
