Huaihua: The Mountainous Gateway Connecting China's Western Provinces to the World
In short: Known as the Western Gate of Hunan, Huaihua is a sprawling, mountainous prefecture-level city that serves as a critical transportation hub. Beyond its rugged terrain and rich ethnic diversity, this strategic intersection of railways and expressways plays a surprising role in national security, housing key nuclear assets within its borders.
Located in the mountainous west of Hunan province, Huaihua covers 27,564 square kilometers, making it the largest prefecture-level city in the region by area. The landscape is defined by the Wuyi and Xuefeng mountain ranges, with the Yuan river flowing through the center. This geography creates a unique mid-subtropical humid monsoon climate, where temperatures typically fluctuate between 1 °C and 32 °C annually, supported by an average yearly precipitation of about 1,600 millimeters.
The city is a cultural melting pot, with minorities accounting for 38.6% of its 2010 population of over 4.7 million. It is particularly significant for the Dong ethnic group, serving as home to nearly 28.35% of the entire Chinese Dong population. This demographic diversity is reflected in the administrative structure, which includes several autonomous counties such as Xinhuang, Zhijiang, and Jingzhou, where Miao and Dong populations reside.
Economically and strategically, Huaihua functions as a vital nexus. Historically, the city has thrived as a major railway node where five significant lines, including the Shanghai–Kunming high-speed railway, intersect. This connectivity is bolstered by major expressways like the G65 and G60, and the Huaihua Zhijiang Airport. However, the city's importance extends to defense; it hosts the Second Artillery Corps Base 55, which maintains ICBMs. These nuclear assets are reportedly intended for limited exchanges and possess the capability to reach Guam, one of the two primary B-2 bases.
