A Japanese manga series explores fitness through the lens of high school life
In short: How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? follows a high school girl who joins a gym to lose weight, only to discover a world of intense training and eccentric characters. This popular series blends comedy with genuine fitness motivation, bridging the gap between everyday life and the pursuit of physical excellence.
Written by Yabako Sandrovich and illustrated by MAAM, the manga series began serialization on Shogakukan's Ura Sunday website and MangaONE app in August 2016. The story centers on Hibiki Sakura, a student who decides to join the Silverman Gym after noticing her weight gain. Her motivation shifts upon meeting the trainer Naruzo Machio, a professional whose deceptively muscular physique is so extreme that he frequently rips his clothes when flexing. The narrative follows Hibiki and her peers as they navigate the challenges of strength training, often highlighting the contrast between their high school lives and their gym aspirations.
The series shares a universe with Sandrovich's other work, Kengan Ashura, and features several characters with connections to that world. For instance, Akemi Soryuin is the younger sister of a Kengan Ashura character, while the gym trainer Machio is a disciple of Harnold Dogegenchonegger, a parody of Arnold Schwarzenegger. These connections add layers to the character dynamics, as the cast includes a diverse group of individuals, from a history teacher who is secretly a famous cosplayer to a Russian student who practices sambo. The manga has grown significantly since its debut, reaching twenty tankōbon volumes by August 2024.
Beyond the printed page, the series saw a successful twelve-episode anime adaptation produced by Doga Kobo, which aired in 2019. The show gained recognition for its catchy opening theme, Onegai Muscle, and was nominated for awards at the 4th Crunchyroll Anime Awards. While the series is lighthearted and comedic, it maintains a focus on the mechanics of fitness, providing a unique perspective on health and discipline. Its blend of humor, character-driven storytelling, and fitness culture has resonated with audiences, earning it a nomination for the 65th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2019.
