Who are the Hoklo people, and why is their name a matter of debate?
In short: The Hoklo are a Han Chinese sub-ethnic group with roots in southeastern Fujian. While widely known as the Hokkien people, their identity is defined by a distinct language, unique architectural traditions, and a vast diaspora across Southeast Asia. Yet, the very name Hoklo remains a complex, contested linguistic puzzle.
The term Hoklo is an exonym, borrowed from Cantonese or Hakka speakers, and is not universally recognized by the people it describes. In Southeast Asia, these communities typically identify as Hokkien people. The name itself has sparked various folk etymologies. One popular theory, popularized by the Taiwanese Ministry of Education in 1957, links it to the Yellow and Luo Rivers to emphasize a deep historical connection to China's Central Plains. Other interpretations range from 'learned folk' to 'crane folk,' reflecting the diverse ways this group has been categorized over centuries.
Genomic research offers a different perspective on their origins. Studies suggest that the Hokkien people cluster between northern Sinitic populations and southern Austronesian or Tai-Kadai groups, indicating a history of migration and admixture. Some evidence even points to a shared paternal ancestry with populations from the Taihang mountain region in Henan. This history is preserved in their language, which retains archaic pronunciations—such as the /t/ initial for 'bamboo'—that vanished from other Sinitic varieties before the 6th century.
Beyond language, the Hoklo are known for a distinct architectural style characterized by slanted, high-reaching rooftops and intricate porcelain and wood inlays. These features are exceptionally well-preserved in diaspora hubs like Malaysia, where buildings such as the Khoo Clan House in Penang showcase the traditional aesthetic. Today, while the Hokkien language remains a vital heritage, its daily usage is gradually shifting in many regions toward Mandarin, English, and local languages, marking a new chapter for this widespread community.
