Why calling the Netherlands 'Holland' is a source of local tension
In short: Many travelers use the name Holland to describe the entire country, but for many Dutch citizens, this is a significant misnomer. This linguistic slip is more than just a mistake; it is a byproduct of centuries of economic and political dominance by a single, powerful region.
The confusion stems from 'Hollandocentrism,' a phenomenon where the region's historical dominance leads it to be used as a substitute for the whole nation. During the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age, the province of Holland became the wealthiest nation in the world, serving as the economic and political heart of the United Provinces. This influence was so profound that the urban dialect of Holland eventually became the standard language, and the region's merchants became the primary point of international contact.
Geographically, 'Holland' refers specifically to two provinces: North Holland and South Holland. These two provinces contain the country's three largest cities: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague. While the term is often used colloquially by foreigners and even some Dutch people, it is technically a part of the country, not the whole. In fact, the area once included West Frisia, which was conquered following the St. Lucia's flood in 1287.
This distinction is a sensitive matter of identity. Residents from provinces outside the Holland region often find the term misrepresentative, drawing parallels to how people in Scotland or Wales might feel when the United Kingdom is referred to simply as 'England.' This regionalist sentiment is fueled by the perception that Holland's cultural and economic weight poses a threat to local identities. Consequently, in 2019, the Dutch government officially dropped support for using 'Holland' to represent the entire country, opting instead for 'the Netherlands' in all international communications.
