How a tiny, water-logged Dutch province became a global powerhouse of industry and intellect
In short: South Holland is a paradox. It is one of the world's most densely populated regions, yet it balances massive petrochemical refineries and Europe's busiest port with delicate, historic landscapes. From the birthplace of microbiology to the world's largest greenhouse complex, this small province has shaped global trade and science.
South Holland, a province of 3,308 square kilometers, is a testament to human engineering and adaptation. Situated on the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta, it has been inhabited for at least 7,500 years. Its geography is defined by water; over 600 square kilometers of its territory is submerged, and much of the remaining land consists of polders—low-lying tracts reclaimed from the sea. This precarious relationship with the North Sea necessitated the construction of the massive Delta Works, completed in 1997, to prevent catastrophes like the 1953 flood that claimed 677 lives.
The province's economic identity is as varied as its landscape. It hosts the Port of Rotterdam, the busiest in Europe, and the continent's largest oil refinery in Pernis. Simultaneously, it is an agricultural giant; the Westland region contains the world's largest contiguous greenhouse area, covering 2,750 hectares. This industrial and agricultural output is supported by a service-oriented economy centered in The Hague, the seat of the Dutch government, and a history of intellectual output that includes figures like Christiaan Huygens and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.
The political evolution of South Holland was equally complex. Originally part of the County of Holland, the area was reorganized repeatedly during French rule between 1795 and 1813. It was not until 1840 that the modern province of South Holland was formally established, separated from North Holland because the original province was deemed too dominant in wealth and population. Today, it remains the most populous province in the Netherlands, housing over 3.8 million people and serving as the core of the Randstad conurbation, a testament to its enduring role as a central hub of European life.
