In short: Founded in 1873 to ferry migrants across the Atlantic, Holland America Line transformed from a Dutch shipping powerhouse into a modern cruise subsidiary of Carnival Corporation. Today, the line balances its storied history of transatlantic ocean liners with a contemporary fleet, private island destinations, and extensive overland tours in Alaska.

Established as the Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij (NASM) in 1873, the company initially focused on regular passenger and cargo services between Rotterdam and North America. By its 25th anniversary in 1898, it had transported over 400,000 immigrants. The line’s early decades were marked by rapid expansion, including the acquisition of larger vessels and a brief period under the International Mercantile Marine Company cartel, which saw the line unwittingly involved in J.P. Morgan's business interests.

The 20th century brought immense challenges and shifts in identity. During World War I, the line lost five ships, and in World War II, it suffered the loss of thirteen vessels, including the sinking of Zaandam (II) in 1942, which resulted in 135 deaths. Following the war, the company pivoted from immigrant transport to luxury travel. The 1958 launch of Rotterdam (V) solidified its reputation for innovation, but the rise of air travel eventually forced the company to abandon scheduled transatlantic crossings in 1971 in favor of dedicated cruising.

In 1989, Carnival Corporation acquired the company for 1.2 billion guilders. Under this new ownership, the line expanded its footprint, acquiring private destinations like Half Moon Cay in 1996 and diversifying into rail and hotel operations in Alaska. Despite the sale of older tonnage and fleet reductions during the 2020 pandemic, the company continues to honor its heritage; its current flagship, Rotterdam (2020), is the seventh vessel to carry the name, and its logo remains an artistic nod to the iconic 1937 liner, Nieuw Amsterdam (II).
