A record-breaking naval vessel navigating the world's most treacherous waters
In short: From seizing millions in cocaine to navigating icy, low-visibility waters to deliver medics, HMS Medway is a master of versatile maritime patrol. While it serves as a guardian of British interests, its journey reveals a complex web of sovereignty, disaster relief, and high-stakes logistics.
Designed for worldwide operations, the Batch 2 River-class offshore patrol ship HMS Medway entered service during 2019. Unlike standard ships, it was built with 29 specific modifications to the Amazonas-class corvette design, enabling it to handle constabulary tasks like counter-piracy and anti-smuggling. A record since World War II was set when it finished sea trials within 75 days, highlighting its rapid assembly. Construction began at the BAE Systems Govan shipyard in Glasgow in June 2015. Instead of a traditional launch, the ship was rolled onto a semi-submersible barge for its 2017 entry into the water. It was officially named on 20 October 2017.
The vessel's operational history highlights its role as a multi-purpose asset. In the Caribbean, it has partnered with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary to provide disaster relief and secure borders. Its success in counter-narcotics is quantifiable: in 2022, it captured over 400 kg of cocaine worth £24 million, and in a 2020 operation, it helped seize cocaine with a UK street value of £81 million. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the ship was on standby to offer support in the Caribbean. It also assisted the British Virgin Islands in controlling the spread of the virus in late 2020. The vessel was also tasked with conducting search and rescue exercises with civilian helicopters.
Beyond policing, Medway performs delicate diplomatic and humanitarian missions. In 2026, it navigated rough waters to deliver clinicians to Tristan da Cunha to manage a potential Hantavirus case. However, its presence also sparks geopolitical friction. Its 2026 visit to Punta Arenas drew protests from Argentina, which claimed the use of the Strait of Magellan violated an 1881 Boundary Treaty, illustrating how a single patrol vessel can sit at the center of international maritime disputes. The ship previously served as a guardship in the Falkland Islands while its sister ship, HMS Forth, underwent maintenance. To conduct explosive ordnance disposal, paratroopers belonging to 16 Air Assault Brigade were moved to South Georgia by the ship during April 2026. The vessel also recently returned six rare turtles to their original habitat in the Azores.
