In short: What happens when a liberal arts education prioritizes human connection over mass production? At Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the academic experience is built on a 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio, ensuring that every student is mentored by scholars who treat teaching as a collaborative partnership rather than a lecture.

The educational philosophy at Hobart and William Smith Colleges centers on 'relationship-rich' learning. This is operationalized through an 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio, allowing students to work closely with professors who serve as mentors and collaborators. To transcend traditional academic settings, this framework incorporates practical field studies and extra-curricular activities via specific hubs such as the Finger Lakes Institute and the Melly Institute for Business, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The 'HWS Guaranteed Internship' serves as a fundamental component; via the Salisbury Center for Career Education, each pupil receives a research position or internship. To ensure accessibility, the college provides funding for roles that are unpaid or underpaid, aiming to bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice.

This commitment to real-world experience is backed by a Career Services office ranked #10 in the nation. The curriculum, known as the Perspectives Curriculum, emphasizes student agency. After a required first-year seminar, students choose a major and can add a second major or minor, connecting ideas across disciplines. This academic flexibility is complemented by a global reach, with over 60% of students studying abroad in more than 50 countries, supported by a campus where over 50 languages are spoken.
