The 'Team of All Talents' that broke every record in sight
In short: Before the First World War, one rugby league side was so dominant they were considered nearly unbeatable. They assembled a squad from across the British Empire to create a dynasty that still holds world records today for scoring and consecutive unbeaten matches.
The Huddersfield Giants are among the oldest clubs in Rugby League, celebrating their 150th anniversary in 2014. Their roots trace back to 1864 when the Huddersfield Athletic Club formed a football section. By 1875, they merged with St John's Cricket Club to become the Huddersfield Cricket and Athletics Club. This evolution eventually led to the adoption of 'Fartown' as their home ground in 1878, a nickname that would persist for over a century.
The club entered a 'golden period' leading up to World War I, assembling what was dubbed "The Team of All Talents." Led by Harold Wagstaff, this squad won 13 trophies in the five years preceding the war. Their dominance was defined by extraordinary three-quarter play; in the 1913–14 season, Albert Rosenfeld broke a record for tries scored by a wing that remains unbroken to this day, netting 80 tries in a single season.
Huddersfield's statistical feats are staggering. In 1914, they defeated Swinton Park 119–2, a scoreline that stood as a world record until 1994. They also achieved an incredible unbeaten run of 38 consecutive matches before the league was suspended in 1915. This era cemented their legacy, with three members of this specific side being elected to the Rugby League Hall of Fame—more than any other club.
The club's trajectory has seen significant highs and lows since those golden years. They won a record-breaking Championship final in 1949 before facing a period of decline in the 1970s, where they briefly rebranded as the 'Barracudas.' A new board of directors saved the club from collapse in 1989, restoring their original identity and beginning a slow recovery of both stadium facilities and attendances.
