The treacherous gateway that once promised a shortcut to the Orient
In short: Spanning 750 kilometers between Baffin Island and the Canadian mainland, the Hudson Strait serves as a vital maritime artery connecting Hudson Bay to the Atlantic. Though it now supports northern seaports, early European explorers initially dismissed this formidable passage, misjudging its potential as a gateway to the elusive Northwest Passage.
The Hudson Strait is a massive waterway in Nunavut, Canada, stretching approximately 750 kilometers in length. Its geography is defined by its varying width, which narrows to 70 kilometers at its eastern entrance and expands to 240 kilometers near Deception Bay. It functions as a critical link between the Atlantic Ocean and the Labrador Sea to the east, and Hudson Bay to the west, effectively serving as a maritime bridge for northern ports in Manitoba and Ontario.
European interest in the strait began in the late 16th century. Sir Martin Frobisher was the first to report entering the area in 1578, though he famously dubbed it the Mistaken Strait, believing it lacked the potential of the passage that would later bear his name. He also encountered a turbulent tidal rip at the entrance, which he named the Furious Overfall. John Davis passed the entrance during his 1587 voyage, but the first significant exploration occurred in 1602 when George Weymouth navigated 300 nautical miles beyond the Furious Overfall.
The strait eventually took its name from Henry Hudson, who explored the region in 1610 aboard the ship Discovery. This same vessel had previously carried Weymouth in 1602. Following Hudson, the region saw further activity, including an expedition by Thomas Button in 1612 and a mapping mission led by Robert Bylot and William Baffin in 1616. Today, the International Hydrographic Organization precisely defines its boundaries, stretching from the eastern coast of Southampton Island in the west to a line connecting Cape Chidley in Labrador to the southern tip of Baffin Island in the east.
