A rare late-season storm defying historical patterns in 2020
In short: Hurricane Zeta arrived in October, a time when tropical activity usually wanes. It became one of the most active years on record for the continental United States, marking a significant shift in seasonal behavior and highlighting the increasing frequency of late-season landfalls.
Zeta was part of an exceptionally busy 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. By October 28, it was the fifth storm to hit Louisiana that year and the eleventh to make landfall in the continental United States. According to meteorologist Jeff Masters, this was the most landfalls for the U.S. since 1916, when nine storms made landfall.
The timing of Zeta was also statistically unusual. Only six hurricanes have reached American land since 170 years ago. starting from October 28. Despite its late arrival, it maintained significant intensity, reaching Category 2 status with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour before making landfall in southeastern Louisiana.
The storm's path was complex, involving multiple landfalls and reorganizations. It first hit the Yucatan Peninsula on October 26, where it brought a 3-foot storm surge and up to 7 inches of rain. After moving back over water, it reorganized into a hurricane again before striking the U.S. coast. This rapid movement was notable because it helped limit total rainfall accumulation even as the system caused widespread damage.
Zeta's impact was felt across several regions, from the Caribbean to New England. While it brought heavy rain and landslides in Jamaica on October 24, its remnants eventually traveled as far as the United Kingdom by November 1. The storm serves as a primary example of how late-season systems can still carry enough energy to cause billions of dollars in damage across thousands of miles.
