In short: Late-season hurricanes are rare, but Nicole proved that even a sprawling, disorganized system can pack a punch. After forming near the Caribbean, it defied typical patterns by striking the Bahamas and Florida in November, leaving a trail of erosion and power outages across a region already recovering from previous storms.

Hurricane Nicole began as a non-tropical low-pressure system that emerged near the Greater Antilles in early November 2022. By November 7, it had evolved into a subtropical storm south-southwest of Bermuda. As it moved westward, the storm underwent a transition into a tropical cyclone, intensifying as it approached the Bahamas. On November 9, Nicole made landfall at Marsh Harbor on Great Abaco Island and subsequently reached hurricane strength upon striking Grand Bahama Island.

The storm's trajectory was dictated by complex atmospheric interactions, including a cold front and a mid-level anticyclone that steered it toward the Florida coast. Nicole made landfall near Vero Beach early on November 10. Despite its hurricane status, the system struggled to maintain its core intensity due to intrusions of dry air that disrupted its convection. As it crossed the Florida Peninsula, the storm passed between Orlando and Tampa, eventually emerging briefly over the Gulf of Mexico near Homosassa before making a second Florida landfall at Cedar Key.

Nicole’s path was historically significant, marking only the third time a November hurricane had made landfall in Florida. The storm’s large size caused extensive beach erosion along the state's east coast and resulted in widespread power outages. By the time it reached the Florida Big Bend and moved into Georgia, it had weakened to a tropical depression. It eventually dissipated after being absorbed by a low-pressure system over Atlantic Canada on November 12, concluding a rare and disruptive late-season weather event.
