In short: After the 2024 collapse of the Assad regime, Syria entered a new era under Ahmed al-Sharaa. Once a notorious militant commander known as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, he now serves as president, steering a transitional government tasked with drafting a new constitution and navigating the country toward a post-Assad future.

The presidency of Syria has undergone radical shifts since the French Mandate era. Following the 1922 creation of the Syrian Federation, the office saw a succession of leaders, coups, and constitutional rewrites. By 1970, Hafez al-Assad seized power, establishing a hereditary dictatorship that lasted until his son, Bashar al-Assad, was overthrown in December 2024. This long period of Ba'athist rule was marked by a pervasive personality cult and the consolidation of absolute power within the Assad family.

Ahmed al-Sharaa, born in 1982, rose to prominence as the leader of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham. His background is complex; he spent time in the U.S.-run Camp Bucca detention center in Iraq before returning to Syria to fight in the civil war. Initially forming the Nusrah Front with ties to al-Qaeda, he later distanced his organization from the group around 2016. His path to the presidency began after the fall of the Assad regime, when he assumed de facto control before being officially appointed by the Syrian General Command in January 2025.

The current transitional period is governed by a constitutional declaration signed on 13 March 2025. This framework establishes a presidential system where the president holds significant executive authority, including the power to appoint ministers and issue regulatory measures. Unlike the previous regime, the current administration is operating under a five-year mandate intended to stabilize state institutions and prepare for future elections. As of July 2025, al-Sharaa is recognized by the United Nations as the official head of state, marking a profound departure from the political landscape of the preceding decades.
