How a century-old engineering college became a premier Indian Institute of Technology
In short: Founded in 1919, this Varanasi institution evolved from a regional engineering college into a globally ranked Indian Institute of Technology. By maintaining unique administrative ties to Banaras Hindu University, it balances modern technical rigor with the deep academic heritage of one of India's most historic university campuses.
The institution began in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College, established under the vision of Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya. Over the decades, it expanded through the creation of specialized colleges like the College of Mining and Metallurgy in 1944. By 1968, these units merged to form the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University. While the institute sought IIT status as early as 1972, political complexities delayed this transition for decades. It was not until the passage of the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011, and subsequent presidential assent in June 2012, that it was formally integrated into the elite IIT system.
Despite its new designation, the institute retains a unique governance structure. Under the 1961 Act, the executive council of Banaras Hindu University holds the power to nominate the Vice Chairman and two board members. According to former HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, this arrangement was intentionally designed to preserve the integrity of the parent university while fostering cross-disciplinary research between the technical institute and the broader university environment.
Today, the institute serves as a hub for both technical innovation and student life. It hosts Asia's oldest techno-management festival, Technex, and operates the Malaviya Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship, which has supported startups since 2008. Its academic reach is supported by a library housing approximately 142,000 volumes and access to nearly 10,000 e-journals. Internationally, the institute continues to gain recognition, ranking 566th globally in the 2026 QS World University Rankings, with seven subjects placing in the world's top 300.
