In short: Established in 1994, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati emerged from a historic political accord to bolster regional infrastructure. Today, it stands as a premier residential university, blending rigorous engineering research with a sprawling campus on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, shaping the next generation of global technical talent.

The origins of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati are rooted in the 1985 Assam Accord, a landmark agreement that concluded the six-year Assam Movement. This pact committed the central government to enhancing educational facilities within the state. After initial site selection challenges in Misa, the project found its permanent home on a 700-acre site in North Guwahati. The institute was formally established in 1994, with Professor Dhirendra Nath Buragohain serving as its founding director. Academic operations began in 1995, and the campus has since grown into a fully residential hub, featuring hostels named after the region's prominent rivers.

The institute operates under the Institutes of Technology Act, maintaining a structure common to all Indian Institutes of Technology, with the President of India serving as visitor. Its academic scope has expanded significantly over the decades. While it began with core engineering disciplines, it now encompasses 13 departments and several multidisciplinary schools, including specialized units for agro-rural technology, business, energy sciences, and a dedicated school for data science and artificial intelligence supported by the Mehta family. This expansion reflects a broader mission to integrate advanced research with practical societal applications, such as carbon capture technology developed in partnership with NTPC Limited.

Beyond academics, the university fosters a vibrant student culture through annual festivals like Alcheringa and Techniche. Its influence extends into the professional world, with alumni founding successful ventures like TravelTriangle and cybersecurity firms like SquareX. The institute's commitment to innovation is also evidenced by the deployment of the Param Ishan supercomputer. As of August 2024, the institution supports over 8,500 students, maintaining a strong presence in global rankings and continuing to serve as a critical engine for technical education and research excellence in India.
