In short: Barcelona Sporting Club, based in Guayaquil, is an Ecuadorian institution that has never been relegated to the second division. Named after the founder's home city in Spain, the club commands the largest fanbase in the country, with over seven million supporters and a legendary rivalry known as the Shipyard Derby.

Founded on 1 May 1925 by Eutimio Pérez, Barcelona Sporting Club emerged from the Astillero neighborhood of Guayaquil. The club shares its birthplace with its fiercest rival, Club Sport Emelec. Their matches, known as El Clásico del Astillero, are considered the most significant derby in Ecuador. The rivalry is so deeply embedded in the national culture that it inspired a 1973 film, El derecho de los pobres, featuring the legendary Ecuadorian player Alberto Spencer.

The club's history is defined by its dominance in the Ecuadorian Serie A, where it has secured a record 16 national titles. Despite this domestic success, continental glory has remained elusive. Barcelona was the first Ecuadorian club to reach the Copa Libertadores finals, achieving the feat in 1990 and 1998, yet they fell short on both occasions. The 1990s were particularly bittersweet, marked by the tragic death of striker Carlos Muñoz in 1993 and a series of high-stakes international campaigns that cemented the club's status as a continental contender.

Home matches are played at the Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha, the largest stadium in Ecuador. Originally inaugurated in 1987 with a capacity of nearly 90,000, it remains a symbol of the club's ambition. While safety regulations have reduced capacity to under 60,000, the stadium remains the heart of the club's identity. Beyond football, the organization maintains professional teams in sports ranging from basketball to boxing, though its primary legacy remains its unwavering presence in the top tier of Ecuadorian football.
