The hidden mountain fortress that served as Gaul's capital

Inside Bibracte: The Lost Fortress City of the Gauls - Full Documentary · 50:09 · Video: Easy Documentary · Watch at the source

In short: Deep in a French forest lies Bibracte, a massive Gallic city buried for two millennia. This documentary uses LIDAR technology and CGI to reconstruct how 10,000 people lived within its unique fortifications.

Bibracte was the most significant oppidum (fortified city) in Gaul, built by the Aedui tribe on a mountain peak in Burgundy. The site is notable for its 'indestructible' fortifications, which were unique among Gallic cities of that era.

Archaeologists are using modern LIDAR topographic maps to uncover evidence of rapid Romanization within the city. Key findings include sophisticated hydraulic systems, a basilica, and a forum, marking a major turning point in the transition from Gallic to Roman influence.
