The tiny Andorran club that broke the European ceiling
In short: In a nation of mountains and micro-states, one football club achieved the unthinkable. Inter Club d'Escaldes didn't just dominate their domestic league; they became the first team from Andorra to ever reach the main phase of a major UEFA competition.
Inter Club d'Escaldes was established in 1991 in Escaldes-Engordany. While it spent years establishing itself as a consistent competitor, its journey to the top of Andorran football was marked by both stability and struggle. The club was a founding member of the Primera Divisió in 1995, remaining in the top flight for two decades until a relegation in April 2015. They spent two seasons outside the elite before returning to the first division in May 2017.
The club's modern era of dominance began remarkably late. Despite being a mainstay in the league, it took until the 2019–20 season for the team to secure its first-ever Primera Divisió title and domestic cup. This breakthrough sparked an unprecedented period of success; they secured four consecutive titles between 2019 and 2022, followed by two more in the 2024–25 and 2025–26 seasons. This rapid ascent transformed them from a mid-table side into a regional powerhouse.
The most significant milestone occurred during the 2026–27 UEFA Conference League play-offs. Inter Club d'Escaldes secured their status as the initial Andorran team to reach a European tournament's group stage after overcoming FC Drita of Kosovo via a penalty shootout. This achievement follows a steady progression in continental football, including their debut in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League and notable home victories against clubs like Hibernian (2–1 in 2023) and FCSB (2–1 in 2025).
The club's identity is deeply tied to its origins, where it enjoyed significant support from the construction company Construccions Modernes. This partnership was so foundational that the company's initials, CM, remained on the club's crest until 2019. Known by their colors as 'blau-i-negres,' the club now stands as a symbol of Andorran sporting progress on the international stage.
