In short: Before 1995, Andorran football lacked official structure or even a governing body. Today, the Primera Divisió connects this small principality to the grandest stages of European football, proving that even the smallest nations can find their place in the global game.

The origins of Andorra's top-flight football are remarkably recent. For decades, clubs competed in an unstructured amateur league that lacked any official institutional affiliation. This changed in 1994 with the creation of the Andorran Football Federation, which paved the way for the launch of the Primera Divisió in 1995. By 1996, the federation secured affiliation with both FIFA and UEFA, a pivotal moment that allowed Andorran clubs to enter prestigious European competitions.

The league's structure is a fascinating study in efficiency and shared resources. Most clubs do not possess their own grounds; instead, they play in stadiums owned by the federation. In fact, since the 2016–17 season, FC Encamp has been the only club in the league to operate its own stadium, the Camp de Futbol d'Encamp in Prada de Moles. This centralized model extends to training, with the federation managing the distribution of fields for all teams.

The competition itself follows a unique format designed to maintain intensity. The eight participating clubs play each other three times initially. After 21 rounds, the league splits into two groups: a top four and a bottom four. These groups then play each other twice more, totaling 27 games. The stakes are high, as the bottom-placed team faces direct relegation to the Segona Divisió, while the penultimate team must fight for survival in a two-legged play-off against the Segona Divisió runners-up.

While the league has seen various sponsorship names, such as Lliga Grup Becier and Lliga Grup Sant Eloi, it is currently known as Lliga Multisegur Assegurances. Interestingly, the league's history is not just about the clubs within its borders; the prominent FC Andorra actually competes in the Spanish league system under the Royal Spanish Football Federation, rather than the Andorran top flight.
