How a decades-long infrastructure project finally bridged the gap between two major southern regions
In short: Interstate 22 spans over 200 miles across Mississippi and Alabama, serving as a vital link between Memphis and Birmingham. Originally conceived in the 1950s as Corridor X, this highway finally closed a significant missing piece in the national network, connecting the central United States to the southeastern corridor.
The development of Interstate 22 was a multi-generational endeavor that began with discussions in the 1950s. For over two decades, the project remained largely theoretical until Congressman Tom Bevill championed the initiative in the 1970s. It was officially recognized as Corridor X within the Appalachian Development Highway System in 1978. The route underwent numerous legislative changes, eventually being designated as a high-priority corridor in 1995 and later as Future I-22 in 2004.
Construction progressed in segments over many years, often facing funding hurdles and evolving design requirements. A major milestone occurred in 2010 when the HIRE Act provided the necessary federal support to finalize the complex interchange with I-65 near Birmingham. This contract, awarded to Archer Western Contractors for $168.6 million, stood as the most expensive highway project in Jefferson County history at the time. The final connection to I-65 was completed in June 2016, marking the culmination of a massive effort to modernize regional transit.
The highway serves as more than just a local road; it functions as a critical artery that enables continuous freeway travel between cities as distant as Oklahoma City and Atlanta. By following the path of the older U.S. Route 78, I-22 integrates rural communities like Jasper, Tupelo, and Holly Springs into the broader Interstate system. Today, the route is fully established, with official I-22 signage deployed across both states, providing a streamlined path that bypasses the slower, local routes that once defined travel through this region.
