In short: Interstate 20 is more than a road; it is a massive economic corridor spanning two-thirds of the United States. From the Texas plains to the South Carolina coast, it connects major hubs like Dallas and Atlanta, weaving through diverse terrains and complex histories of engineering and expansion.

Completed in 1957, Interstate 20 was the first Interstate highway to connect Texas to the East Coast. Covering a distance of 1,539 miles, this road starts where I-10 meets it in Reeves County, Texas, before finishing at I-95 in Florence, South Carolina. Along its route, it serves as a vital link for southern economic powerhouses, including Dallas–Fort Worth, Shreveport, Jackson, Birmingham, Atlanta, and Columbia.

The highway's history is marked by significant rerouting and engineering challenges. In 1977, I-20 was moved from its original path through the heart of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex to its current southern route through Fort Worth and Dallas. It also features notable infrastructure, such as the 'Malfunction Junction' in Birmingham—an interchange so confusing it was notorious for accidents before being reconfigured. A notably large stack interchange exists within Jackson, Mississippi, where I-20, I-55 north, and US 49 south converge.

Diverse regional identities and various naming styles characterise this path. In Georgia, it carries multiple names, including the 'Tom Murphy Freeway,' the 'Ralph David Abernathy Freeway,' the 'Purple Heart Highway,' and the 'Carl Sanders Highway.' While there have been proposals to extend the highway into North Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Transportation currently has no interest in upgrading US 76 to Interstate status, focusing instead on plans for I-73 and I-74.
