Interstate 30: How a Former Toll Road Became a Vital Southern Artery
In short: Spanning over 366 miles across Texas and Arkansas, Interstate 30 is more than just a highway. It evolved from a pioneering toll road into a critical corridor, connecting major metropolitan hubs and shaping the growth of the American South through decades of infrastructure projects and strategic urban planning.
The origins of Interstate 30 are rooted in the Dallas–Fort Worth Turnpike, a 30-mile controlled-access tollway completed in 1957. This project was financed by $58.5 million in bonds raised by the Texas Turnpike Authority, established in 1953. The turnpike served as the only direct link between the downtown areas of Dallas and Fort Worth until 1977, when the bonds were paid off, toll collection ceased, and the road was integrated into the Interstate System. Today, this stretch is known as the Tom Landry Highway, honoring the legendary Dallas Cowboys coach.
As the highway expanded, it absorbed existing routes like U.S. Route 67, which had been in heavy use since the early 1950s. While much of the interstate was completed by 1965, a 40-mile rural segment between Mount Pleasant and New Boston remained unfinished until 1971. The route has undergone constant evolution; for instance, the section between Dallas and Arlington was widened to over 16 lanes in some areas by 2010. Ongoing infrastructure efforts, such as the East Corridor project, aim to further expand capacity in Dallas by 2025–2030.
The interstate's path through Arkansas is equally complex, passing through cities like Texarkana, Hope, and Little Rock. In Little Rock, the highway serves as a nexus for auxiliary routes, including I-430, I-440, I-530, and I-630. The route eventually crosses the Arkansas River to reach its terminus at I-40 in North Little Rock. Future planning continues to shift the landscape, with provisions now in place to potentially designate parts of the corridor as I-57, demonstrating how I-30 remains a dynamic, ever-changing component of the national transportation network.
