The Panamanian boxer who conquered the lightweight division twice
In short: Ismael Laguna, famously known as "El Tigre Colonense," rose from Panama to become a two-time Undisputed Lightweight Champion. His career was defined by incredible resilience, reclaiming a world title in 1970 after losing it, and securing his legacy within the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Born on June 28, 1943, Ismael Laguna Meneses became a central figure in mid-century boxing. His technical prowess earned him the nickname "El Tigre Colonense" and led him to capture the World Lightweight Championship in 1965. This victory established him as a premier force in the 135 lbs division, a weight class he would dominate during his peak years.
Laguna's career was marked by both triumph and the harsh realities of professional combat. After his initial reign, he faced significant challenges, including a 15-round decision loss to Carlos Ortiz in 1967 during a bid to regain his lightweight title. However, he demonstrated remarkable tenacity by reclaiming the belt in 1970. This second championship run cemented his status as a two-time Undisputed Lightweight Champion, a rare feat in the sport.
The twilight of his career saw further setbacks, including a loss to Ken Buchanan in 1971, which prompted his retirement from the ring. His impact on the sport was formally recognized through multiple honors: he was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 1999 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001. On September 8, 2026, Laguna died at 83, coinciding with the passing of Panamanian boxing coach María Toto.
His legacy is preserved not just in the record books, but through the high standard of skill he brought to the lightweight division. Despite being stripped of his WBC title before his eventual loss of the WBA title to Buchanan, Laguna remains a celebrated icon of Panamanian athletic achievement.
